Maison Creole Restaurant

Maison Creole Restaurant

French Quarter, New Orleans

MaterialsReclaimed heart pine, antique cypress beams, salvaged brick
Volume4,200 BF

A complete interior renovation of a historic French Quarter building transformed into an upscale Creole restaurant. The owners wanted the space to honor the 180-year-old structure while meeting modern commercial kitchen and dining requirements. We supplied reclaimed heart pine flooring salvaged from a demolished cotton warehouse in the Warehouse District. Each board was kiln-dried, de-nailed, and tongue-and-groove milled to 3/4-inch by 5-inch planks. The original wide-plank floors had been covered by decades of linoleum and carpet, so the new reclaimed flooring restored the building to something closer to its original character. Four massive antique cypress beams, each spanning 22 feet, were installed as exposed ceiling elements in the main dining room. The beams came from an 1890s sugar mill in St. James Parish and still bear the marks of the original hand-hewn timber work. Patina was preserved on all visible surfaces while structural faces were cleaned and treated with borate preservative.

Whitfield House Restoration

Garden District, New Orleans

MaterialsOld-growth longleaf pine, cypress clapboard siding, heart pine stair treads
Volume6,800 BF

This 1870s Garden District home sustained significant damage from a fallen oak tree and years of deferred maintenance. The restoration required matching the original old-growth longleaf pine that is no longer commercially available. We sourced matching heart pine from a demolished schoolhouse in Natchez, Mississippi, and a dismantled railroad depot in rural Alabama. The grain density -- averaging 22 rings per inch -- was a near-perfect match to the existing 150-year-old flooring. Over 3,000 board feet of tongue-and-groove flooring was milled to match the original 7/8-inch by 3-1/4-inch profile, an unusual dimension not produced by modern mills. An additional 2,400 board feet of cypress clapboard siding was reclaimed from a demolished church in Thibodaux to replace damaged sections of the home's exterior. Every replacement board was hand-selected to match the grain pattern and weathering of the adjacent original boards. New heart pine stair treads were fabricated for the main staircase and back service stairs, replicating the bullnose profile of the originals.

Iron & Grain Lofts
Commercial

Iron & Grain Lofts

Warehouse District, New Orleans

MaterialsReclaimed Douglas fir, industrial steel, salvaged oak
Volume12,500 BF

A former early-1900s textile warehouse converted into twelve luxury loft apartments. The developer committed to using reclaimed materials wherever possible, both for environmental reasons and to preserve the industrial character of the building. We supplied over 12,500 board feet of material for the project. Reclaimed Douglas fir from a demolished Pacific Northwest grain elevator was used for all interior partition framing and exposed ceiling joists. The fir had a beautiful amber color with tight, straight grain that contrasted with the building's original exposed brick walls. Salvaged white oak from dismantled bourbon barrels was milled into accent wall panels for each unit's living area, adding warmth and a subtle whiskey aroma that faded over the first few months. Common areas feature reclaimed oak plank flooring throughout the hallways and lobby, finished with a commercial-grade matte polyurethane for durability. The project diverted approximately 15 tons of lumber from the waste stream.

Dauphine Street Shotgun Revival
Residential

Dauphine Street Shotgun Revival

Marigny, New Orleans

MaterialsHeart pine flooring, cypress trim, reclaimed pine shiplap
Volume2,800 BF

A classic New Orleans double shotgun house, built in 1895, was gutted and rebuilt while preserving the original facade and structural cypress framing. The homeowners, a young couple relocating from Portland, wanted authentic materials with modern performance. We supplied 1,400 board feet of reclaimed heart pine flooring for the living spaces and bedrooms. The flooring came from a demolished textile mill in Meridian, Mississippi, and features the deep amber tones and tight grain characteristic of old-growth longleaf pine. All flooring was kiln-dried to 7 percent moisture content and milled to a 3/4-inch tongue-and-groove profile. An additional 800 board feet of reclaimed pine shiplap was installed as an accent wall in the main living area and the primary bedroom. The shiplap retained its original white paint ghost, creating a naturally distressed aesthetic without any artificial aging. Cypress baseboards, window casings, and door frames were milled from salvaged cypress to match the home's original profile, which featured a distinctive ogee detail not found in modern stock trim.

Pelican Capital Group Offices
Commercial

Pelican Capital Group Offices

Central Business District, New Orleans

MaterialsReclaimed white oak, walnut conference table slab, cypress paneling
Volume3,600 BF

A 4,500-square-foot office buildout on the 12th floor of a CBD high-rise for a private equity firm. The design concept was to bring warmth and natural materials into a modern glass-and-steel tower. We supplied reclaimed white oak for a feature wall in the reception area, spanning 14 feet high and 28 feet wide. The oak planks were arranged in a herringbone pattern and finished with a zero-VOC hardwax oil. A 12-foot live-edge walnut slab, salvaged from a storm-damaged tree in Audubon Park, was fabricated into the main conference room table, supported by custom blackened steel legs. The slab was kiln-dried, flattened with a router sled, and finished with eight coats of arm-r-seal to create a glass-smooth surface while preserving the natural bark edge. Reclaimed cypress paneling was installed in two private offices and the break room, adding acoustic dampening and visual warmth. The total project used no virgin-harvested hardwood lumber.

The Morrison Fireplace
Residential

The Morrison Fireplace

Uptown, New Orleans

MaterialsAntique cypress beam mantel, reclaimed brick surround
Volume85 BF

Sometimes the most impactful projects are the smallest. The Morrison family wanted a statement fireplace mantel for their 1920s Uptown bungalow that felt like it had always been part of the house. We sourced a single antique cypress beam, originally a floor joist from a demolished 1880s warehouse on Tchoupitoulas Street. The beam measured 8 inches by 10 inches by 7 feet and weighed approximately 175 pounds. One face was hand-planed to reveal the rich honey-gold heartwood beneath decades of grime, while the remaining three visible faces retained their original rough-hewn texture and patina. The ends were cut at a slight angle and the beam was mounted on concealed steel brackets engineered to support its weight plus a safety factor. A custom-mixed penetrating oil finish was applied to enhance the grain without adding any surface sheen. The surrounding brick was sourced from the same demolished warehouse, creating a cohesive material story. The result is a fireplace that looks like it has anchored the room for a hundred years.

Flux Gallery

Flux Gallery

Bywater, New Orleans

MaterialsReclaimed mixed-species planks, salvaged pine ceiling boards
Volume1,900 BF

An artist-run gallery in a converted Bywater corner store needed accent walls that would complement rotating art exhibitions without competing with the work. We supplied a curated mix of reclaimed planks in varying widths (3 to 8 inches) and species -- heart pine, cypress, white oak, and poplar -- all from local demolition sources. The planks were installed horizontally on three walls with randomized widths and a deliberate mix of warm and cool tones. Some boards retained original paint remnants in muted blues, whites, and greens, while others showed raw weathered wood. The effect is a textured backdrop that reads as neutral despite its complexity. The ceiling was clad in reclaimed pine tongue-and-groove boards with their original beadboard profile, whitewashed with a thin lime wash that lets the grain show through. Floating oak shelves made from salvaged joist material provide display surfaces along one wall. The gallery owner reports that the wood walls have become a talking point at every opening and have even inspired several artists to incorporate reclaimed materials into their work.

Bergeron Family Dining Table
Residential

Bergeron Family Dining Table

Metairie, Louisiana

MaterialsReclaimed longleaf pine, forged iron base
Volume45 BF

The Bergeron family commissioned a custom dining table built entirely from reclaimed longleaf pine salvaged from a demolished 1910 Gentilly ice house. The tabletop was constructed from five boards, each approximately 10 inches wide and 8 feet long, edge-glued with waterproof polyurethane adhesive and reinforced with steel butterfly keys at each joint. The boards were planed to a uniform 1-3/4-inch thickness, revealing stunning old-growth grain with 24 to 28 rings per inch and a deep amber color that modern plantation pine cannot replicate. The surface was hand-scraped to remove mill marks while preserving a subtle texture, then finished with four coats of Rubio Monocoat in the Pure color, which adds protection without altering the natural color. A local blacksmith fabricated the trestle base from 2-inch square bar stock, forge-finished with a light texture and sealed with beeswax. The completed table seats ten comfortably and weighs approximately 220 pounds. The family uses it daily and reports that the aged pine surface has proven remarkably resistant to the wear of three young children.
