Our Fabrication Process

Every custom piece follows a structured process that ensures your vision is realized exactly as you imagined — or better.

1

Design Consultation

We start with a conversation about your vision. Share photos, sketches, Pinterest boards — anything that communicates what you are looking for. We visit your space when needed to take measurements and understand the context.

2

Material Selection

Based on your design, we select the ideal reclaimed wood from our inventory. You are welcome to visit our yard and hand-pick the specific boards that will become your piece. We guide you on species, grain patterns, and character.

Finishing

The finish is applied according to your preferences — natural oil, matte polyurethane, satin lacquer, food-safe epoxy, or left raw. We match stains and finishes to your existing decor when requested.

6

Delivery & Installation

We deliver your finished piece and handle installation for wall-mounted items, built-ins, and accent walls. Everything is leveled, secured, and ready to enjoy.

Finishes

Finish Options

The right finish protects the wood and defines the aesthetic. We offer a range of options to match your style and the piece's intended use.

Natural Oil

Penetrating tung oil or Danish oil that enhances the wood grain while allowing it to breathe. Low sheen, warm feel. Easy to touch up.

Matte Polyurethane

Durable water-based polyurethane with a flat, modern finish. Excellent protection for high-traffic surfaces while maintaining a natural look.

Satin Lacquer

Professional-grade lacquer with a soft glow. Ideal for furniture that needs to look refined without the shine of a high-gloss finish.

Food-Safe Epoxy

Crystal-clear, food-safe epoxy finish for bar tops, counters, and dining tables. Waterproof, heat-resistant, and extremely durable.

Wax

Traditional paste wax finish that gives wood a subtle, aged warmth. Best for low-use decorative pieces like mantels and shelving.

Unfinished

Sanded smooth but left raw for clients who want to apply their own finish or enjoy the natural feel and patina of bare reclaimed wood.

Why Reclaimed

Reclaimed Wood Makes Better Furniture

Old-growth reclaimed lumber is genuinely superior to most new wood for furniture making. The tight growth rings of century-old heart pine and virgin cypress create wood that is denser, harder, and more dimensionally stable than fast-grown plantation timber.

Beyond performance, reclaimed wood carries irreplaceable character. Nail holes, saw marks, weathering patterns, and natural patina tell the story of the wood's previous life — a story that becomes part of your piece.

And there's the environmental benefit: choosing reclaimed wood for your custom furniture means no new trees were felled, no forests were cleared, and carbon stays sequestered in the wood instead of returning to the atmosphere in a landfill.

Denser Grain

Tighter growth rings than new lumber

Unique Character

Carbon Neutral

No new trees harvested

Project Portfolio

A selection of completed custom fabrication projects that showcase the range of what we build and the quality of our craftsmanship. Every piece uses reclaimed wood from our inventory.

Farmhouse Dining Table

Reclaimed Heart Pine96" x 42" x 30"

A 12-seat farmhouse trestle table built from heart pine joists salvaged from a 1910 warehouse in Algiers. The tabletop is composed of five bookmatched planks with breadboard ends joined using traditional draw-bore mortise-and-tenon joinery. The base features turned legs and a stretcher made from the same stock. Finished with four coats of satin polyurethane for daily family use. The growth ring density on these boards averaged 14 rings per inch.

Restaurant Bar Top

Live-Edge Cypress18' x 26" x 2.5"

An 18-foot continuous bar top fabricated from two bookmatched live-edge cypress slabs joined with a butterfly key inlay of contrasting walnut. The natural edge was preserved, cleaned, and sealed with clear epoxy. The top surface received a food-safe, two-part epoxy finish that is waterproof, scratch-resistant, and easy to clean. The cypress was sourced from a storm-felled tree in Manchac Swamp — estimated at over 300 years old.

Corporate Reception Desk

White Oak & Steel120" x 36" x 42" (standing height)

A modern reception desk combining reclaimed white oak panels with a blackened steel frame. The oak face features a waterfall edge that wraps from the desktop to the floor panel in a continuous grain pattern. Internal cable management was routed into the desktop with concealed grommets. The steel base was fabricated by a local metalworker to our specifications. Finished with a matte lacquer that highlights the quartersawn ray fleck.

Fireplace Mantel & Surround

Old-Growth Cypress72" x 8" x 6" (mantel beam)

A hand-hewn cypress beam mantel with matching vertical surround panels. The mantel beam was selected for its dramatic adze marks and natural checking, which were cleaned and stabilized but intentionally preserved for character. Surround panels were planed smooth and stained to complement the raw beam. The beam weighed 87 pounds and was mounted with concealed steel brackets rated for 200 lbs. A custom gas log opening was framed into the surround.

Floating Shelf System

Reclaimed Heart Pine5 shelves, 48" x 10" x 2" each

A set of five floating shelves for a home library, built from matched heart pine planks sourced from the same original building for consistent color and grain. Each shelf is hollow-core construction — two bookmatched face boards glued to a torsion-box interior — keeping the appearance of solid 2-inch stock while reducing weight to under 12 pounds per shelf. Concealed steel rod mounting system supports 75 lbs per shelf.

Sliding Barn Door

Mixed Reclaimed Cypress & Pine84" x 36" x 1.75"

A full-size sliding barn door built using a Z-brace pattern from mixed reclaimed boards. We deliberately selected boards with varying degrees of weathering — from silver-gray to warm amber — to create a graduated color pattern across the door face. Hardware was sourced from a local blacksmith (hand-forged track and rollers). The door separates a master bedroom from an ensuite bathroom and includes a soft-close mechanism integrated into the track system.

Material Guide

Wood Selection Guide for Furniture

Choosing the right species for your project is critical. Each wood has unique properties that make it ideal for specific applications. Here is our expert recommendation guide.

Species
Hardness (Janka)
Best Applications
Characteristics & Notes
Longleaf Heart Pine
1,225 lbf
Dining tables, flooring, desks, shelving
The gold standard of Gulf South reclaimed wood. Dense, resinous, and warm-toned with amber-to-honey coloring. Extremely stable when properly dried. Old-growth heart pine is harder than most hardwoods. Excellent for any high-use surface.
Bald Cypress
510 lbf
Mantels, outdoor furniture, bar tops, accent walls
Naturally rot-resistant and dimensionally stable, making it ideal for both interior and exterior applications. Lighter in weight than pine. The grain ranges from straight and uniform to dramatically figured with cathedral patterns. Takes finishes beautifully.
White Oak
1,360 lbf
Tables, countertops, cabinetry, heavy-use furniture
The hardest common species in our inventory. Quartersawn white oak displays striking ray fleck patterns. Naturally resistant to moisture due to tyloses (cellular structures that block water). Excellent for food-contact surfaces and bar tops.
Red Oak
1,290 lbf
Shelving, desks, bed frames, general furniture
Similar hardness to white oak but with a more pronounced, open grain pattern and warmer reddish-brown tone. More porous than white oak, so not ideal for liquid-contact surfaces without a sealed finish. Takes stain exceptionally well.
Pecan
1,820 lbf
Tabletops, cutting boards, live-edge slabs
The hardest species we regularly stock. Dramatic grain with contrast between heartwood (dark brown) and sapwood (light cream). Exceptionally durable for high-traffic surfaces. Our pecan slabs are among our most requested items.
Mixed Reclaimed
Varies
Accent walls, barn doors, decorative paneling
Mixed species and mixed patina boards create a visual mosaic effect. We curate mixed bundles with intentional variety in color, texture, and grain pattern. Ideal for projects where character and visual diversity are the priority over material uniformity.
After Delivery

Care Instructions for Your Custom Piece

Every piece we deliver comes with specific care instructions based on the wood species and finish applied. Here are our general care guidelines to keep your reclaimed wood looking beautiful for generations.

Daily Care & Cleaning

  • Wipe surfaces with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid soaking the wood.
  • Use coasters, placemats, and trivets to protect surfaces from moisture rings and heat marks.
  • Clean spills immediately — even sealed wood can absorb liquids if left standing.
  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, steel wool, or scouring pads on any finished surface.
  • For oil-finished pieces, a microfiber cloth works best to avoid lint deposits in the grain.

Environmental Considerations

  • Wood is a natural material that responds to humidity changes. Maintain indoor humidity between 35-55% to prevent cracking or warping.
  • Avoid placing reclaimed wood furniture in direct sunlight for extended periods, as UV exposure can alter the color over time.
  • Keep pieces away from heating vents, fireplaces, and radiators. Rapid temperature changes cause wood to expand and contract unevenly.
  • In Louisiana's humid climate, air conditioning is your furniture's best friend. Consistent climate control prevents moisture-related movement.

Finish Maintenance

  • Oil finishes (tung oil, Danish oil): Reapply a thin coat every 6-12 months or when the surface feels dry. Buff with a soft cloth after application.
  • Polyurethane finishes: No routine reapplication needed. Clean with a wood-safe cleaner. Can be lightly sanded and recoated if scratched after several years.
  • Wax finishes: Reapply paste wax every 3-6 months using a soft cloth in a circular motion. Buff to desired sheen.
  • Epoxy finishes: Virtually maintenance-free. Clean with any mild household cleaner. Avoid dragging sharp or abrasive objects across the surface.

Long-Term Preservation

  • Reclaimed wood naturally develops patina over time — this is a feature, not a flaw. The wood will continue to change subtly with age and use.
  • Minor scratches and dents add character. For deep scratches on oil-finished pieces, apply a small amount of matching oil directly to the scratch.
  • If a piece requires refinishing after years of use, contact us. We offer refinishing services and can match the original finish specification exactly.
  • Keep our care card (included with every piece) for reference. It includes the specific finish product, species, and any special considerations for your piece.
